Consultant Ecologist

We are currently recruiting a suitably qualified and experienced Consultant Ecologist (full or part-time) to contribute to our vibrant Canterbury office.

Ideally, we are seeking a Consultant Ecologist with two or more years’ professional experience of working within the consultancy sector. We have won a range of large and interesting projects, and have helped our clients to secure planning permissions. Consequently, there are plenty of career opportunities for the right candidate.

We provide a diverse range of ecological services, on projects that range from sensitive historical sites to large-scale, multi-phased mixed development projects. We work as a close-knit, dynamic team with a strong focus on sharing expertise through training and professional development.

Canterbury is a city on the move. It is a World Heritage Site, with great pubs and restaurants. Nestled in fantastic scenery with the coast a short journey away. Canterbury is well connected to London, with London St Pancras only 55 minutes away by train, allowing evening and weekend visits to the capital. Ashford International is within 30 minutes, from which you can journey to Europe (even for a day). With so many internationally important sites for wildlife on the doorstep, the ecology team visit some of the best wildlife sites in the UK during internal CPD training events.

The main responsibilities will include:

  • Leading on great crested newt, reptile, bat and other protected species survey work
  • Designing ecology mitigation strategies
  • Producing survey and mitigation reports to support planning applications
  • Project management and delivery
  • Building client relationships
  • Undertaking Risk assessments and Health and Safety inspections for survey work
  • Attending client and design team meetings when required
  • Adhering to our internal checking procedures through the company QA process.

Essential:

  • Good experience of bat, reptile and great crested newt survey, with experience in surveying for other protected species groups
  • A degree in ecology (or closely-related field), or someone with excellent field experience and skills
  • Previous experience of working in an ecological consultancy (a minimum of 2 years), or of working in another ecology-related professional environment
  • Graduate, Qualifying or Associate member of CIEEM
  • Full driving licence and access to a car for business use
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience of report writing and client liaison
  • Proficient in MS Office and willingness to learn other IT packages
  • A good team player with the ability to work independently
  • An enthusiastic, motivated and aspirational person who wants to contribute to a dynamic ecology team

Desirable:

  • Experience of project management
  • Licensed to work with protected species, and ideally with great crested newts and/or bats and/or dormice
  • Masters or PhD in ecology-related subject
  • Experience of applying wildlife-related legislation and policy in ecological consultancy
  • Experience of preparing European Protected Species Licenses
  • Experience of preparing Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs).

Lloyd Bore is a vibrant, multidisciplinary landscape consultancy based in Canterbury, Kent providing Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Ecology and Arboricultural services to a broad, high profile client base.

Due to our expanding project portfolio, we have a number of exciting opportunities for professional, motivated Landscape Architects and Senior Landscape Architects, interested in joining our team.

Our project work covers a wide range of sectors, including, healthcare, education, leisure, residential, commercial, and public realm. Depending upon experience you will be expected either to lead and manage individual projects, or work collaboratively with a senior project manager, in delivering high quality output for our clients. As a growing business there will also be opportunities for career progression and CPD to match the drive and ambition of the successful candidate.

We are seeking candidates who can bring the following experience and skills to our team;

  • Natural design ability and creative flair
  • A good understanding of hard and soft construction techniques, processes and products
  • Excellent plant knowledge
  • Experience in LVIA / EIA, and strong report writing skills
  • Capable of working as part of a team, but also independently.

The successful candidate will be highly motivated, organised and professional. Depending upon experience and position applied for, you will be either a Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute, or a graduate / postgraduate diploma or MA level Landscape Architect keen to pursue the Pathway to Chartership (we regularly act as mentor for Pathway candidates).

You will have a high level of proficiency in CAD and Adobe Creative Suite. Experience of Keyscape and BIM would be desirable, but is not essential. You will be required to travel across the UK (but principally south-east England) and therefore must hold a valid UK drivers licence.
